Maths KIRF’s what are they and why do they matter?

A common question we get asked is, ‘What can I be doing with my child at home to help with their maths’

With so many websites, games and apps at our fingertips, it can be hard to know where to start.

The key thing we recommend here at Learn & Bloom is by learning their KIRF’s.

KIRF’s are key instant recall facts – the key number facts students need to underpin all their maths at primary school. Being able to recall these confidently and at speed can make a huge difference to the rest of their maths as it provides a great foundation to work up from.

There are different objectives set out for each year group. You can look at the year group your child is in and follow these. You may find you need to dip back to other year groups from time to time or go over them again but that is ok.

There are great apps that support these key facts such as ‘White Rose’ and ‘Hit the Button’. These can bring the facts to life a little bit more for your child. It also brings in a timed element too as pupils do need to learn to work at speed with these facts.

The KIRFs also outline when we should learn each times table. As children have to know all their tables for an assessment at the end of year 4, this is extremely vital too.

Your school should be sending these facts home each school year but if you would like a copy of all these KiRFs sign up to our free downloads and these will be sent to you in our download.

Helping children see how numbers work, patterns and number facts, makes their maths seem far more accessible. Those basic number facts are still vital even as high up as GCSE maths.
